Since I finished my new hat (love it, btw!) it's time to move onto the scarf. I was trying to come up with some design to make it more interesting (definitely not another garter stitch!) than the last one, but just decided to go with a simple seed stitch border (4 rows on the ends, then 4 stitches on each edge), with stockinette stitch in the middle. Since the scarf is not very wide, having some other sort of pattern in the middle would have looked too busy, I think.
I have about 6 inches done so far and my first impressions are that it has a definite front and back. Almost like a table runner. (sigh) I think it will look alright, though. The yarn that I am using has interesting texture in that it runs from super-thick (could use size 13 probably) to super-thin (could go down to size 3 easily). When knitted up it gives it a smooth but uneven finish, which I like. Got the yarn from Seaport...completely cleaned her out of the stock in this color. I'm using size 11 14" straight bamboo needles. I bought these to originally make DH a scarf with the Brown Sheep Burly Spun, but they were way too small. I ended up frogging that and turning the yarn into his hat, which was knit on size 15 dp needles. Although I'm glad that I am able to use the needles on this project, after using circular needles on a few projects, I have to admit my allegiance from now on might be with circulars, even for flat knitting.
Well, I'm going to try and leave the house at least for a little while this afternoon. It has been a struggle being alone all day in a new city where I know noone. Even just going to the local coffee shop and knitting in the corner makes me feel more engaged with the community at large. Usually I am much more into exploring new places, but really, the cold this winter has me snuggled up with the pug instead of trekking across Times Square in search of adventures. It snowed last night and the streets look so pretty, it's time to go out and enjoy them, methinks!
